THE USE OF CIMETROPIUM BROMIDE(ALGIRON) IN PATIENTS WITH IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome is one bf the commonest gastrointestinal disorders and has proved.to be one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose and manage. Anticholinergic drugs which have been used in management of irritable bowel syndrome are not satisfactory in their effect of alleviating the patient¢¥s symptoms and have some side-effects. Scopolamine-N-(cyclopropyl methyl) bromide(D.A. 3177), which was discovered by Casadio and Donetti in 1974, is a selective antispasmodics which has a neurotrophic and myotrophic action without atropine-like action. Cimetropium bromide (Algiron) is a selective agent that antagonize the cholinergic action of muscarinic receptor in intestinal smooth muscle. Contrary to the other antimuscarinics, this agent does not have an effect on the receptor of blood vessel. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the ¢¥ . ¢¥Cimetropium bromide(Algirone) we studied 29 ¢¥ patient¢¥s with irritable bowel syndrome who visited Chonnam University Hospital. In this study, 29 patients were received 50mg Cimetropium bromide(Algirone) 3 times daily for 4 weeks. Global evaluation of therapeutic efficacy was 72% of patients treated with Cimetropium bromide(Algiron). The effective rates of Cimetropium bromide(Algirona) on clinical symptom were 68% in abdominal pain, 559/6 in abdominal fullness, 27% in diarrhea, 14% in constipation, 48% in dyspepsia, 20% in nausea and vomiting. Most of the symptom scores were significantly decreased on 2 and 4 weeks after Teament and there :was no significant side effect. Therefore, it is concluded that Cimetropium bromide(Algirone) is an
